Exodus wallet review 2026: easy self-custody, but fewer features than before
Exodus is still one of the friendliest self-custody wallets for holding and swapping mainstream coins on desktop and mobile. In 2026 it dropped its browser extension, dApp browser and WalletConnect, so it no longer suits DeFi users. Its swap spread, often 0.5% to 2%, makes it a costly place to trade often.
Status as of October 2026: Exodus is made by Exodus Movement, Inc., founded in 2015 and based in Omaha, Nebraska. The company is listed on NYSE American (ticker EXOD) and reported 1.4 million monthly active users at 31 Aug 2026 (Exodus monthly metrics, 11 Sep 2026). Big recent changes: Exodus ended support for WalletConnect and the in-app dApp browser and for its Web3 browser extension (Exodus support centre, Oct 2026). CryptoSlate reports that NFT support ends on 1 Dec 2026 (CryptoSlate, Oct 2026). The company is moving into payments after buying the card firms Monavate and Baanx (deal announced in November 2025, closing announced 1 May 2026).
Verdict
Exodus is built for people who want a good-looking wallet that just works. You can hold Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and other major coins, swap between them in a couple of taps and see everything in one portfolio. It runs on all major desktop systems and both phone platforms, and it can work with a Ledger or Trezor.
Two things hold it back. First, swaps are priced with a spread you cannot see, so frequent traders pay more than they would elsewhere. Second, Exodus has cut its Web3 side in 2026. If you use dApps, DeFi or NFTs, pick another wallet.

| Swaps | A spread built into the quoted rate. Exodus publishes no fixed rate. It advertised swaps "from 0.5%" in January 2025, and third-party reviews estimate about 0.5% to 2%, higher on small amounts (CryptoSlate; CryptoTicker, 9 Oct 2026) |

Fees as of October 2026. Swaps matter to Exodus: "exchange aggregation" made up 71.5% of its revenue in Q2 2026 (CryptoTicker, citing Exodus filings). Compare quotes with another wallet before large swaps, and see our wallet fees comparison.
Is Exodus safe?
Exodus is a hot wallet. Your keys are created on your device and protected by your password or biometrics. Exodus never holds your coins. That means no exchange can freeze them, but also that nobody can recover them if you lose your 12 words. Mobile users can add an encrypted cloud backup protected by a passkey.
A hot wallet is only as safe as the computer or phone it runs on. Malware that can read your screen or files is the main threat. For larger amounts, connect a hardware wallet so the keys never touch your computer.
Incident history
| Date | What happened | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Feb 2024 | A fake "Exodus" app on Ubuntu's Snap Store stole recovery phrases. One user reported losing about 9 BTC | Canonical removed the app after a report on 12 Feb 2024. The real Exodus was not involved |
| Apr 2025 | ReversingLabs found a malicious npm package, pdf-to-office, that modified Exodus and Atomic Wallet installs on infected computers to redirect payments (CryptoSlate) | The official Exodus installers were not affected |
| 16 Dec 2025 | The US Treasury's OFAC announced a $3,103,360 settlement with Exodus over 254 apparent sanctions violations. Between Oct 2017 and Jan 2019, support staff had helped users in Iran reach partner exchanges, including by suggesting VPNs (OFAC; Akin Gump) | A compliance case, not a hack. No user funds were involved |
We found no reported breach of Exodus's own systems that cost users money. See our incident tracker and fake wallet apps guide.
Key features
- Built-in swaps through Exodus's XO Swap aggregator and partner exchanges.
- Portfolio view with charts across all your coins.
- Staking for coins such as Ethereum and Solana, with some assets limited to desktop or mobile.
- Hardware wallet support for Ledger and Trezor, so you can keep the Exodus interface with cold-storage keys.
- Exodus Markets, launched in June 2026 with Ondo Finance for tokenised assets (Exodus news, 12 Jun 2026). Availability depends on your country.
What it no longer does: connect to dApps, run as a browser extension or, from December 2026 according to CryptoSlate, show NFTs. If you hold NFTs in Exodus, move them to another wallet using your recovery phrase before that date.
Recovery and moving your coins
Everything in an Exodus wallet comes from your 12-word recovery phrase. If your computer dies or your phone is lost, install Exodus on a new device and restore with those words. Your password alone cannot restore a wallet; it only unlocks the copy on one device.
Because the phrase follows the common BIP39 standard, you can usually restore the same Bitcoin and Ethereum accounts in another wallet if you ever leave Exodus. Some coins may use different derivation paths, so check balances carefully after moving. With the end of NFT and dApp support, many users are doing exactly this. Move a small amount first, confirm it arrives, then move the rest.
Exodus support will never ask for your recovery phrase. Anyone who does, on email, social media or a "live chat", is a scammer. Our seed phrase safety guide covers storage options.
Setting up safely
- Download only from exodus.com or the official app stores. Type exodus.com yourself or use a bookmark. Search ads and lookalike sites for "Exodus Web3 wallet" are common, and the extension no longer exists, so any site offering it is suspect.
- Check the publisher in the App Store or Google Play is Exodus Movement, Inc.
- Write down the 12 words on paper, in order, and keep them offline. Never paste them into a website or "support" chat.
- Set a strong password and turn on biometrics on mobile.
- Send a small test amount first, and double-check addresses to avoid address poisoning.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Very easy to use, with a polished design | Swap spread is hidden in the rate and can reach about 2% |
| Desktop apps for Windows, macOS and Linux plus mobile | No dApp, WalletConnect or extension support since 2026 |
| Works with Ledger and Trezor | Not fully open source |
| Public company with audited filings and monthly metrics | The company's focus has shifted towards payments |
| No breach of Exodus systems on record | December 2025 OFAC settlement shows past compliance gaps |
Who Exodus suits, and who should look elsewhere
Good fit: beginners and long-term holders who want a desktop wallet for major coins, occasional swaps and an easy path to a hardware wallet.
Look elsewhere if: you use DeFi, dApps or NFTs, you swap often and care about cost, or you require fully open-source software.
Alternatives
- Trust Wallet: free, multi-chain and still supports dApps. See Trust Wallet vs Exodus.
- Electrum: open-source desktop wallet if you only need Bitcoin.
- Atomic Wallet: a similar desktop-and-mobile style, but read its 2023 hack history first.

Frequently asked questions
Is Exodus wallet safe?
Exodus is a reputable self-custody wallet with no reported breach of its own systems that cost users money. As a hot wallet it is only as safe as your device, so use a hardware wallet with it for larger amounts and never share your 12-word phrase.
How much does Exodus charge for swaps?
Exodus does not publish a fixed fee. The cost is a spread built into the quote. Third-party reviews put it at about 0.5% to 2%, higher on small swaps, plus network fees.
Does Exodus still have a browser extension?
No. Exodus ended support for its Web3 browser extension in 2026 and also removed WalletConnect and the dApp browser from its mobile app. Treat any site offering an Exodus extension download as a likely scam.
Is Exodus the same as the EXOD stock?
Exodus Movement, Inc. is the company that makes the wallet, and its shares trade on NYSE American as EXOD. Owning the wallet has nothing to do with owning the stock.
Can I use Exodus with a Ledger or Trezor?
Yes. Ledger Nano X and Flex connect over Bluetooth on mobile. Trezor devices connect over USB on desktop, and the Trezor Safe 7 connects over Bluetooth on mobile.
