The best Bitcoin wallets in 2026

For Bitcoin savings, a hardware wallet such as Trezor or Ledger, used with Electrum or the maker's app, is the strongest choice. Electrum is our top Bitcoin-only software wallet. If you also hold other coins, Exodus, Trust Wallet and now MetaMask and Phantom support native Bitcoin too.

Bitcoin is simpler than other chains: no token approvals, no smart contracts in everyday use. That makes key storage the main question. Most Bitcoin losses come from lost or phished seed phrases, not from hacks of the network.

How we rank wallets

Nobody pays for a place on this list. We have no affiliate links, no sponsorships and no referral codes, and we do not link to wallet websites. Rankings use the same criteria for every wallet:

  • Security model and track record (most weight). Where the keys live, what has gone wrong before, and how the company responded and whether it paid users back.
  • Transparency. Open-source code, public audits, and fees stated clearly.
  • Fit for the job. Chains supported, platforms, and hardware wallet support.
  • Ease of use and maintenance. Whether the wallet is actively updated and hard to misuse.

We base rankings on official documentation, public incident records and dated independent reporting as of 25 October 2026. We re-check fees and prices regularly. A ranking is a starting point, not a guarantee: read the full review before you move money.

Hardware first for savings

Trezor has the longest Bitcoin history of any hardware maker, and its firmware is open source. That matters to many Bitcoin users who want code they can verify. Ledger is a strong alternative if you also hold many altcoins, but read our note on the October 2026 implant thefts linked to a reseller. Buy any device only from the maker's store. See Ledger vs Trezor and best hardware wallets.

Electrum: the veteran Bitcoin-only wallet

Electrum has been around since 2011, is open source, and is still actively maintained: version 4.8.3 came out on 23 October 2026 (Electrum release notes). It supports hardware wallets, multisig, coin control and Lightning. The interface is dated and aimed at people who know what a fee rate is. Electrum's history includes phishing attacks that pushed fake "update" messages to users, so download it only from electrum.org, typed by hand, and verify the signature.

Multi-coin apps that handle Bitcoin

Exodus is friendly and works with Trezor on desktop, but it is mostly closed source and charges a spread on swaps. Trust Wallet handles Bitcoin on mobile alongside 100+ other chains (company claim). MetaMask now supports native Bitcoin and Phantom supports Native SegWit, Taproot and Ordinals (Coin Bureau, Jun 2026). Both are convenient for small amounts if you already use them. Coinbase Wallet supports Bitcoin with recovery-phrase accounts, but not with passkey smart-wallet accounts (CryptoSlate, Oct 2026).

Bitcoin wallets outside our top 20

BlueWallet (mobile, with Lightning) and Sparrow (desktop, for power users) are well-regarded open-source Bitcoin wallets we have not reviewed in depth yet. A cautionary note: Samourai Wallet's founders were arrested in the US in April 2024 and the wallet is discontinued, and Mutiny has also shut down. Do not install either from an app store today: listings that use those names may be fake.

Bitcoin-specific tips

  • Send a small test amount first when you set up a new wallet or move to a new address type.
  • Check the address on your hardware wallet screen. Malware that swaps clipboard addresses targets Bitcoin users.
  • Your seed phrase restores everything. A passphrase (a "25th word") adds protection but must be backed up too.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Bitcoin wallet?

For savings, a hardware wallet such as Trezor or Ledger bought from the maker's store. For software, Electrum is our top Bitcoin-only pick. Multi-coin apps like Exodus or Trust Wallet are fine for smaller amounts.

Is Electrum safe in 2026?

Electrum is open source, actively maintained (version 4.8.3, 23 Oct 2026) and widely used. The main risk is fake downloads and fake update prompts, so get it only from electrum.org, typed by hand, and verify the signature.

Does MetaMask support Bitcoin?

Yes. MetaMask now supports native Bitcoin, and its swap feature lists Bitcoin among supported networks (MetaMask support, Oct 2026). It is convenient for small amounts; for savings, use a hardware wallet.

Should I use a Bitcoin-only wallet?

Bitcoin-only software and firmware have less code and fewer features to attack, which many long-term holders prefer. If you also hold other coins, a reputable multi-coin wallet is a reasonable trade-off.

What happened to Samourai Wallet?

Its founders were arrested in the US in April 2024 and the wallet was discontinued. Do not download apps using the Samourai or Mutiny names today.
