The best Ethereum wallets in 2026

Rabby is our top Ethereum wallet for DeFi because it previews every transaction before you sign. MetaMask is the best all-rounder, with the widest app support. For large balances, use a hardware wallet, and for teams use Safe multisig.

Ethereum wallets also work on EVM networks such as Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon and BNB Chain. On these chains the biggest risk is usually not the wallet itself but what you sign: malicious approvals and permit signatures let drainers empty a wallet in one transaction. So we weigh transaction previews and warnings heavily.

How we rank wallets

Nobody pays for a place on this list. We have no affiliate links, no sponsorships and no referral codes, and we do not link to wallet websites. Rankings use the same criteria for every wallet:

  • Security model and track record (most weight). Where the keys live, what has gone wrong before, and how the company responded and whether it paid users back.
  • Transparency. Open-source code, public audits, and fees stated clearly.
  • Fit for the job. Chains supported, platforms, and hardware wallet support.
  • Ease of use and maintenance. Whether the wallet is actively updated and hard to misuse.

We base rankings on official documentation, public incident records and dated independent reporting as of 25 October 2026. We re-check fees and prices regularly. A ranking is a starting point, not a guarantee: read the full review before you move money.

1. Rabby: safest everyday DeFi wallet

Rabby, built by DeBank, simulates each transaction and shows the balance changes and approvals before you sign. It switches to the right network automatically and flags risky contracts. It covers EVM chains only, with no Bitcoin or Solana. In October 2022 Rabby's own swap contract was exploited and users were told to revoke approvals (The Block, 11 Oct 2022). We count that against it, but the extension itself has no known breach since. Compare: MetaMask vs Rabby.

2. MetaMask: the default that works everywhere

Nearly every Ethereum app supports MetaMask first. It now supports Bitcoin, Solana and Tron too, and offers perpetual futures through Hyperliquid. It works with Ledger, Trezor and other hardware wallets. The downsides are a 0.875% swap fee and constant phishing aimed at its users. Typing metamask.io yourself matters.

3. Safe: multisig for serious balances

Safe (formerly Gnosis Safe) is a smart account that needs, say, two of three keys to approve a transaction. It is widely used by DAOs, funds and companies. The February 2025 Bybit theft of about $1.5B happened when attackers compromised the Safe web interface and fooled signers. Each signer should use a hardware wallet and verify transaction details on its screen.

4–6. Coinbase Wallet, Uniswap Wallet and Trust Wallet

Coinbase Wallet offers passkey smart wallets for EVM networks, which means no seed phrase to write down, plus classic recovery-phrase wallets. Its swap fee of up to 1% is steep. Uniswap Wallet is a clean option for swapping now that Uniswap Labs charges no interface fee (Uniswap support, since 27 Dec 2025). Trust Wallet suits people who want EVM chains and many non-EVM chains in one mobile app. See MetaMask vs Trust Wallet.

Other Ethereum wallets

Rainbow, Zerion and Ready (formerly Argent) are popular Ethereum wallets outside our top 20. We have not reviewed them in depth.

Ethereum safety basics

  • Never sign a request you don't understand, especially "Permit" or "setApprovalForAll" requests.
  • Review and revoke old token approvals.
  • Keep a separate "hot" wallet with small balances for new apps and mints.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Ethereum wallet?

Rabby for DeFi users who want transaction previews, MetaMask for the widest app support, and Safe multisig for teams or large balances. Pair any of them with a hardware wallet for savings.

Is Rabby better than MetaMask?

For DeFi safety features, often yes: Rabby previews every transaction and has a lower reported swap fee. MetaMask supports more apps and also handles Bitcoin, Solana and Tron, which Rabby does not.

What is MetaMask's swap fee?

MetaMask lists a 0.875% MetaMask fee on swaps, on top of network fees and the quote rate (MetaMask support, Oct 2026).

Do Ethereum wallets work on Base, Arbitrum and Polygon?

Yes. These are EVM networks, so the same address and wallet work on all of them. Make sure you select the right network before sending.

Can I use a hardware wallet with MetaMask or Rabby?

Yes. Both connect to Ledger and Trezor, so the keys stay on the device while you use the app's interface.
