Ledger review 2026: devices, prices, safety and fees
Ledger hardware wallets keep your keys on a secure chip, offline, and work with almost every major chain and many popular wallets. They are a strong choice for savings, but buy directly from Ledger: devices sold through CryptoBilis, a Southeast Asian reseller Ledger listed as authorised, carried hidden implants that drained users in October 2026. Ledger's firmware is closed source, which some buyers will prefer to avoid.
Status as of October 2026
- Company: Ledger, a privately held French company led by CEO Pascal Gauthier. It paused its IPO plans in 2026 amid weak markets (CoinDesk, 13 May 2026).
- Renames: on 23 Oct 2025 the Ledger Live app became Ledger Wallet, and Ledger now calls its devices "signers" (The Block, 23 Oct 2025).
- Lineup: Nano S Plus, Nano X, Nano Gen5 (launched 23 Oct 2025), Flex and Stax. On 15 Oct 2026 Ledger announced the Atom, a phone-sized device with a secure chip, for delivery in 2027 (Unchained, 15 Oct 2026).
- Breaking: on 10 Oct 2026 Ledger confirmed that devices sold by the Southeast Asian reseller CryptoBilis contained a hidden implant that stole recovery phrases. MediaMarkt Saturn paused Ledger sales in Europe on 13 Oct, and Ledger asked resellers in seven Asian markets to pull stock the same day (Decrypt, 14 Oct 2026). Details below.
Verdict
Ledger is the best-known hardware wallet maker. Its devices keep private keys on a secure element chip, show transaction details on their own screens and work with Ledger Wallet as well as MetaMask, Phantom, Rabby and many other apps. The touchscreen models (Gen5, Flex, Stax) make it much easier to check what you are signing.
Two caveats. First, the secure element firmware is closed, and the optional Ledger Recover service showed in 2023 that firmware can export an encrypted copy of your seed if you opt in. Second, Ledger's customer data has leaked more than once, which fuels phishing letters to this day. Buy direct, set up the device yourself and never type your 24 words anywhere but the device.

|---|---|---|
| Device | One-off purchase | See the table above |
| Ledger Wallet app | Free | |
| Swaps and buys in Ledger Wallet | Set by partner | Partner and network fees are shown before you confirm. Ledger does not publish one swap rate |

As of 25 Oct 2026. Using a Ledger with another wallet, such as MetaMask or Phantom, means that wallet's swap fee applies.
Is Ledger safe?
The device design is strong. Keys are generated and stored on a secure element and never leave it, every transaction must be approved on the device, and the newer models support Clear Signing and Transaction Check so you can read what you are approving. No remote attack that extracts keys from a genuine, untampered Ledger has been reported.
Ledger's weak points have been around the device: customer data, a JavaScript library, the supply chain and controversial product decisions.
| Date | What happened | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Jun 2020 (dumped 20 Dec 2020) | Ledger's e-commerce database was stolen: about 1 million emails and about 272,000 names, postal addresses and phone numbers | Ledger disabled the abused API key and notified France's data regulator, CNIL. The data still fuels phishing, extortion and fake-device scams, such as tampered "replacement" Nano X units mailed in 2021 |
| May 2023 | Ledger Recover announced: an optional paid service that encrypts and splits your seed across three companies. Users objected that firmware could export keys | The CEO apologised for the communication, promised faster open-sourcing and delayed the launch |
| 19 Oct 2023 | A fake Ledger Live app on the Microsoft Store stole about $768,000 | Microsoft removed it |
| 14 Dec 2023 | Connect Kit attack: a phished former employee's npm account was used to push a drainer into dapps using Ledger's library. About $600,000 stolen | Ledger fixed it within hours, pledged to make victims whole by February 2024 and moved away from blind signing |
| Apr 2025 and 14 Feb 2026 | Physical letters on fake Ledger letterhead asked owners to scan a QR code and enter their recovery phrase | Ledger confirmed they were scams |
| 5 Jan 2026 | Breach at Global-e, the payment processor for some Ledger.com orders, exposed names and contact details | Ledger said its own systems were not breached and no funds were at risk |
| 7–13 Apr 2026 | A fake Ledger app on Apple's Mac App Store collected recovery phrases. About $9.5M was lost by more than 50 users | Apple removed it |
| 9–10 Oct 2026 | Devices sold by reseller CryptoBilis carried an implant that read the 24 words from the screen during setup and sent them out over a hidden cellular (LTE) module. On-chain estimates of losses range from about $86M to $93M (Specter, Galaxy Research, Bitquery); Ledger has not confirmed a figure | Ledger had CryptoBilis stop sales, told its customers to move funds to a new device with a new seed, and on 13 Oct asked resellers in seven Asian markets to pull stock. Ledger's documentation says Genuine Check cannot detect physical modifications. We found no reimbursement announcement as of 25 Oct 2026 |
What this means for you: buy from Ledger's own shop where you can. CryptoBilis was listed as an authorised reseller, so that label alone was not enough here, and marketplace bargains are riskier still. Check the packaging, and never use a device that arrives with a pre-printed recovery phrase. Key features
- Secure element chip, PIN protection and on-device confirmation.
- Clear Signing and Transaction Check to show readable transaction details and warn about risky requests.
- Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, swap, stake and connect to dapps without exposing keys.
- Works with other wallets: MetaMask, Phantom, Rabby, Electrum and more.

- Bluetooth and NFC on the Nano X, Gen5, Flex and Stax for phone use.
Setting up a Ledger safely
- Order from the official shop. Type
ledger.comyourself or use a bookmark. An authorised reseller listed there is the next best option, but the October 2026 implants came through one. Fake shops and fake apps are common. - Check the box. A new device should never come with a recovery phrase already filled in.
- Download Ledger Wallet only through the official site. Fake versions have appeared on the Microsoft Store, the Mac App Store and Ubuntu's Snap Store.
- Generate a new 24-word phrase on the device and write it down offline. Ledger will never ask for it by email, letter, phone or app.
- Run the genuine check in Ledger Wallet, and remember it cannot detect hardware implants. Where you bought the device matters more.
- Read every transaction on the device screen before approving. See seed phrase safety.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Keys stay offline on a secure chip.
- Broad coin support and works with many wallets.
- Touchscreen models make transactions easy to verify.
- Bluetooth and NFC for phone use.
- Paid back Connect Kit victims.
Cons
- Closed-source secure element firmware.
- Repeated customer data leaks and the phishing that follows.
- Ledger Recover remains controversial.
- October 2026 tampered-device scandal through a reseller.
- Premium models are expensive.
Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere
Good fit: anyone holding an amount they cannot afford to lose, multi-chain holders who want one device for Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana, and MetaMask or Phantom users who want offline keys.
Look elsewhere if: you want fully open-source hardware and firmware (consider Trezor), you want a card-style device with no seed phrase (Tangem), or you would rather not share a delivery address with a company whose customer lists have leaked.
Alternatives
- Trezor: open-source firmware. See Ledger vs Trezor.
- Tangem: NFC cards with no screen and optional seedless setup. See Ledger vs Tangem.
- SafePal: cheaper air-gapped hardware.

Frequently asked questions
Is Ledger safe after the October 2026 reseller incident?
Ledger says all confirmed losses involve devices sold through one reseller, CryptoBilis, and that it has seen no sign its own systems or direct sales channel were compromised. It is still investigating where the devices were tampered with. Buy direct from Ledger where you can. If you bought from CryptoBilis, move funds to a new device with a new recovery phrase.
Has Ledger ever been hacked?
No genuine Ledger device has had its keys extracted remotely. But Ledger's customer database leaked in 2020, its Connect Kit library was hijacked in December 2023 (about $600,000 stolen, victims repaid), and a payment partner leaked customer contact data in January 2026.
How much does a Ledger cost?
US prices reported in 2026 range from about $59 for the Nano S Plus to $399 for the Stax, with the Nano X at about $99, the Nano Gen5 at $179 and the Flex at $249. Prices vary by region and listing, so check the official shop.
What is Ledger Recover?
An optional subscription, about $9.99 a month in the US, that encrypts your recovery phrase, splits it between three companies and lets you restore it with ID verification. It is controversial because it shows the firmware can export an encrypted seed if you opt in.
What is Ledger Wallet?
It is the new name, since 23 Oct 2025, for the Ledger Live app used to manage Ledger devices, swap, stake and connect to apps.
Is Ledger open source?
Partly. The Ledger Wallet app is open source, but the firmware on the secure element chip is not.
