Coinbase Wallet review 2026 (formerly Base App)
Coinbase Wallet, called Base App from July 2025 to September 2026, is a self-custody wallet from Coinbase that now focuses on onchain trading across 12 networks, including Bitcoin and Solana. It is easy to set up, with passkey and email options, but swap fees run up to 1% and several older networks were dropped in August 2026. It is a good fit for Coinbase customers moving into self-custody.
Status as of October 2026
- Name: Coinbase Wallet again since 10 Sep 2026. Coinbase had renamed it "Base App" in July 2025 and turned it into a social "everything app". CEO Brian Armstrong said in March 2026 that the social push "didn't quite work" (The Block, 10 Sep 2026). Base is now only the name of Coinbase's blockchain.
- Owner: Coinbase, the US-listed exchange company. The wallet is separate from your Coinbase exchange account (see Coinbase Wallet vs Coinbase).
- New focus: onchain trading, including memecoins, tokenized stocks, prediction markets and perpetual futures through Hyperliquid. Some products are geo-restricted, including for US users (Crowdfund Insider, 11 Sep 2026).
- Dropped: the classic wallet interface closed on 15 Aug 2026. Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum Classic, Stellar, XRP, Blast, Celo, zkSync Era and some other networks are no longer shown. Those assets are still yours, but you need to import your recovery phrase into another wallet to reach them (Coinbase Help).
Verdict
Coinbase Wallet is one of the easiest ways to start with self-custody. You can choose a classic recovery phrase, an email or social login, or a passkey smart wallet, and it links neatly to a Coinbase account for funding. Coverage of Bitcoin, Solana and the main EVM networks handles what most people hold.
Its identity has shifted a lot: wallet, then social app, then trading app, all within about 15 months. Swap fees of up to 1% are among the highest we have seen, the passkey wallet cannot hold Bitcoin or Solana, and Coinbase does not publish the fees for its newer trading products.

What happened to Base App?
In July 2025 Coinbase relaunched its wallet as Base App, an "everything app" that mixed a social feed, creator coins, mini-apps, messaging, payments and trading. It did not keep users. Base creator Jesse Pollak acknowledged that creator coins and the social feed failed to hold attention, and on 10 Sep 2026 the app went back to the Coinbase Wallet name with a finance-first design (Crowdfund Insider, 11 Sep 2026).
Coinbase now describes the wallet as a self-custodial "test kitchen" for markets that may not yet be listed on its exchange. Existing balances, addresses and recovery phrases were not affected by either rename. If you see "Base App" in older reviews or app listings, it is the same product.
Fees
| Fee | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DEX swaps | Up to 1% | DEX aggregators may add their own fee, taken from what you receive (Coinbase Help, checked Oct 2026) |
| Network fees | Varies by chain | Gasless swaps available on Ethereum and Polygon for some tokens. Coinbase sponsors gas for USDC sends on Base, up to $0.30 per transaction and $2 per user a month (CryptoSlate, Oct 2026) |
| ETH staking | 15% of rewards | Subject to change, plus gas (CryptoSlate, Oct 2026) |
| Cashing out | Roughly 2–3% via Coinbase.com; 2–5% via third parties | Indicative figures |
| Perps, prediction markets, tokenized stocks | Not published | Coinbase did not disclose the fee structure (The Block, 10 Sep 2026) |
| Wallet itself | Free |
As of 25 Oct 2026. Moving funds from a Coinbase account to the wallet is usually cheap, but trading inside the wallet often costs more than on the exchange. See wallet fees compared.
Is Coinbase Wallet safe?
Yes, for everyday amounts. Coinbase cannot move funds in a self-custody wallet. With a recovery-phrase wallet, your keys are on your device. With a passkey smart wallet, a passkey stored by your phone or password manager controls an onchain smart account, and you can add a recovery key, but only while the original passkey still works. Lose both and Coinbase cannot help.
We found no confirmed theft caused by a flaw in Coinbase Wallet itself. Related events worth knowing:
| Date | What happened | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Feb 2025 | High-severity advisory in Coinbase's developer library @coinbase/wallet-sdk | Fixed in version 4.3.0. Coinbase said it did not directly affect users' keys, contracts or funds |
| May 2025 | Bribed support staff leaked Coinbase exchange customer data | Coinbase said passwords, private keys and funds were not exposed. Leaked data is used for impersonation scams |
| 2025 (reported Feb 2026) | A contractor improperly accessed data on about 30 Coinbase exchange customers | Contractor removed and affected customers notified |
The bigger risk is impersonation. When we searched in October 2026, many fake "Coinbase extension" guide pages hosted on free website builders ranked for setup queries. Sources: CryptoSlate, Oct 2026. See crypto wallet scams and our incident tracker.

Setting up Coinbase Wallet safely
- Type
coinbase.comyourself or use a bookmark, and go to the wallet section from there. Fake guides and extensions are common. - Install the official app from the App Store or Google Play, or the extension from the Chrome Web Store, and check that Coinbase is the publisher.
- Choose your account type with care. If you need Bitcoin or Solana, use a recovery-phrase or email wallet, not a passkey wallet.
- Write down your recovery phrase offline, or create a recovery key for a passkey wallet straight away.
- Coinbase staff will never ask you to move funds to a "safe" wallet or share your phrase. Hang up on anyone who does.
- If you held LTC, BCH, XRP, XLM or ETC in the old app, import your phrase into a wallet that supports those networks.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere
Good fit: Coinbase customers taking their first step into self-custody, Base ecosystem users, and people who prefer a passkey to a written seed phrase.
Look elsewhere if: you hold coins on networks Coinbase dropped, you swap often and care about fees, you need Trezor support, or you want a wallet that will not change its focus again.
Alternatives
- MetaMask: broader dapp support and hardware options.
- Trust Wallet: more chains, including those Coinbase dropped.
- Phantom: a better fit for Solana.
- Safe: smart accounts and multisig for larger sums.
