Coinbase Wallet vs Coinbase: what's the difference?
Coinbase is a custodial exchange: Coinbase holds your crypto, can reset your login and requires ID checks. Coinbase Wallet is a separate self-custody app: you hold the keys, Coinbase cannot recover them, and you can use on-chain apps. Use the exchange to buy and sell with cash, and the wallet for self-custody and on-chain activity.
Same brand, two very different products. The confusion grew when Coinbase renamed its wallet "Base App" in July 2025 and then changed it back to Coinbase Wallet on 10 September 2026 (The Block, 10 Sep 2026). Base is now only the name of Coinbase's blockchain.

Verdict
Neither is "better". They do different jobs. Use the Coinbase exchange to buy or sell crypto with a bank account or card. It is simpler, and you can recover a forgotten login, but your coins depend on Coinbase as a company. Use Coinbase Wallet when you want to hold your own keys, use DeFi or on-chain apps, or keep crypto outside any exchange. For large long-term holdings, a hardware wallet beats both.
Custody: the key difference
On the exchange, your balance is an IOU from Coinbase. That is convenient and recoverable, but it can be frozen and is exposed to the company's risks. In Coinbase Wallet, the keys are yours. Coinbase cannot move, freeze or recover your funds, and if you lose your recovery phrase, nobody can help. Read custodial vs non-custodial.
Wallet account types
Coinbase Wallet offers passkey smart wallets for EVM networks, which use your phone's face or fingerprint unlock with no seed phrase. Recovery depends on a recovery key you must create while you still have the passkey. It also offers classic 12-word recovery-phrase wallets, which work with Bitcoin and Solana too, and email-login accounts (CryptoSlate, Oct 2026). When the classic interface closed on 15 August 2026 it stopped showing Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum Classic, Stellar, XRP and some other networks (Coinbase Help), so check your coins are supported before moving them.
Fees
On the exchange, Simple buys include a spread, which BrokerChooser put at about 1% in October 2026, and card purchases cost extra. Advanced Trade starts at 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker for under $10,000 monthly volume. Coinbase One subscriptions reduce trading fees. In the wallet, DEX swaps carry a wallet fee of up to 1% plus network fees (CryptoSlate, Oct 2026). Coinbase declined to disclose the wallet's full fee structure (The Block, Sep 2026).
Moving between them
You can send crypto from your Coinbase account to your Coinbase Wallet address like any other transfer. Send a small test first and check the network matches. Never share your wallet recovery phrase with anyone claiming to be Coinbase support: real support will never ask for it. See crypto wallet scams.
