Custodial vs non-custodial wallets

A custodial wallet means a company, usually an exchange, holds your keys and can reset access, freeze funds or fail. A non-custodial (self-custody) wallet gives you the keys, so nobody can block you, but nobody can recover lost keys either. Most people use an exchange to buy and self-custody to hold.

Custodial: convenient, but you rely on the company

An exchange account works like online banking: you log in with an email and password, and the exchange signs transactions for you. It is the easiest way to buy and sell. The trade-off is counterparty risk: you own a claim on the exchange, not the coins themselves. If the exchange is hacked, goes bankrupt or freezes your account, you wait.

Protect a custodial account with a unique password, an authenticator app or security key (not SMS), and withdrawal address allow-lists if offered.

Non-custodial: full control, full responsibility

With a self-custody wallet, the keys are created on your device. The company that makes the app never sees them and cannot move your funds. That also means it cannot reverse a mistake, return stolen funds, or recover a lost phrase. Your job is to protect the recovery method (see seed phrase safety) and to avoid signing malicious requests (see wallet drainers).

Confusing names

  • Coinbase vs Coinbase Wallet. The Coinbase app is a custodial exchange account. Coinbase Wallet is a separate self-custody app. It was renamed "Base App" in July 2025 and went back to Coinbase Wallet on 10 September 2026 (The Block, Sep 2026). See Coinbase Wallet vs Coinbase.
  • Binance vs Binance Wallet. Binance Wallet lives inside the Binance app but is a separate self-custody wallet; by default it uses keyless MPC with three key shares in a 2-of-3 design (The Block Research, Aug 2026). See our review.
  • Telegram. Telegram's built-in wallet, renamed Walt in September 2026, has mainly been a custodial account; Keeper (formerly Tonkeeper) is a separate self-custody wallet.
  • OKX and Bitget. Both run exchanges and separate self-custody wallets (OKX Wallet, Bitget Wallet). An exchange-side hack does not automatically affect the self-custody wallet, and vice versa.

How to tell which kind you have

  • Did you write down a 12–24 word phrase, or set up key-share recovery, when you created it? Then it is very likely self-custody.
  • Do you log in with email and password and pass identity checks? Then it is very likely custodial.
  • Can the provider reset your access if you lose everything? Then they hold the keys, or a share that lets them act.

In-between models

MPC wallets split one key into shares held by you and the provider, so neither can sign alone. Smart accounts such as Safe use multiple signers and recovery rules. Both are generally self-custody, but the details matter; see MPC vs seed phrase wallets.

Frequently asked questions

Is a non-custodial wallet safer than an exchange?

It removes the risk of the company failing or freezing your funds, but puts the job of protecting keys on you. For people who back up carefully and avoid phishing, self-custody is generally safer for long-term holdings.

Can a non-custodial wallet company steal my crypto?

In a properly designed self-custody wallet the company never has your keys. Risks come from malicious app updates or fake apps, which is why you should download only from official sources.

Is Coinbase Wallet custodial?

No. Coinbase Wallet is self-custody. The main Coinbase app is a custodial exchange account.

Do I need to move crypto off an exchange?

Not necessarily for small trading balances. For savings, many people withdraw to a self-custody wallet, ideally a hardware wallet.

Can someone freeze my self-custody wallet?

The wallet maker cannot. Some token issuers, such as major stablecoin companies, can freeze their tokens at specific addresses.
