Ledger vs Tangem: which hardware wallet suits you?
Tangem is better if you want the simplest phone-only hardware wallet and are worried about losing a seed phrase. Ledger is better if you want to verify every transaction on a device screen and use desktop and DeFi apps. Buy either only from the maker's own store.

Verdict
Tangem wins on simplicity and price. There is nothing to install on a computer and nothing to charge, and it removes the most common failure, a lost or leaked seed phrase. Ledger wins on verification and versatility. Its screen lets you confirm the address and amount on the device itself, which protects you if your phone or computer is compromised, and it works with far more apps. For DeFi or large balances we prefer a device with a screen.
Security model
Both keep keys in a certified secure chip. Tangem's chip is listed as EAL6+, and audits by Kudelski Security (2018) and Riscure (2023) found no issues exposing private keys (Coin Bureau, Jan 2026). With Tangem you see transaction details in the phone app, not on the card, so you trust the phone's display. Ledger shows details on its own screen.
Backup works differently. Ledger uses a 24-word recovery phrase you must protect. Tangem copies the same key to two or three cards. Lose all of them without having created a seed phrase, and the funds are gone.
Incident history
Ledger's record includes the 2020 customer data leak, the December 2023 Connect Kit attack (about $600,000, with a repayment pledge), the 2023 Ledger Recover controversy, and the October 2026 discovery of implants in devices sold by the reseller CryptoBilis. Those implants captured recovery phrases during setup, with more than $86M to over $90M in suspected thefts estimated by investigators but not confirmed by Ledger (Decrypt, 13 Oct 2026; Galaxy Research). Tangem's main incident was a mobile-app bug: when some users created a seed-phrase wallet, private keys were written to app logs that could reach Tangem support. Tangem fixed it on 30 December 2024, deleted the logs, contacted the affected users (under 0.1%) and said no funds were lost. It was criticised for saying little publicly (Cointelegraph, Dec 2024). The card hardware itself has no breach on record.
Price
A three-card Tangem set ($69.90) costs about the same as a Ledger Nano S Plus (about $59, some listings $79) and already includes two backups. Ledger's Bluetooth and touchscreen models cost $149 to $399.

Frequently asked questions
Is Tangem as safe as Ledger?
Both use certified secure chips. Ledger lets you check transactions on its own screen, which Tangem cards cannot do. Tangem avoids seed phrase risks by storing the key on spare cards.
What happens if I lose my Tangem card?
Use one of the spare cards in your set, since each holds the same key. If you lose every card and never created a seed phrase, the funds cannot be recovered.
Can Tangem be used without a seed phrase?
Yes. By default the key is generated on the card, and a seed phrase is optional. You can also create or import a 12 or 24-word phrase in the app.
Which is cheaper, Ledger or Tangem?
They are close: Tangem costs $54.90 for two cards or $69.90 for three, and the cheapest Ledger, the Nano S Plus, is about $59, with some listings at $79 (Oct 2026).
Does Tangem work with a computer?
Tangem is built around its mobile app and a phone with NFC. If you mainly use a desktop, Ledger or Trezor fits better.
