Tangem review 2026: is the seedless card wallet safe?
Tangem is a well-built, low-cost hardware wallet that stores keys on NFC cards or a ring and works only through a phone app. It is one of the easiest ways for beginners to move off an exchange. The trade-offs are closed-source firmware that can never be updated and no desktop app.
Status (as of October 2026): Active. Made by Tangem AG, based in Zug, Switzerland, and founded in 2017. Recent changes: Tangem Pay, a Visa card linked to your own USDC (rollout from November 2025); a phone-only "Mobile Wallet" mode that you can later upgrade with a card (early 2026); and sales in more than 200 US Best Buy stores (BeInCrypto, 3 Jun 2026). Tangem reported 2025 revenue of $61.3 million, up 102% (The Block, 18 Mar 2026).
Verdict
Tangem turns a hardware wallet into something that looks like a bank card. You tap the card on your phone to approve a transaction, and backup cards replace the usual 12 or 24 words on paper. For people who are worried about losing or leaking a seed phrase, that is a real advantage.
The cost is trust. The chip's firmware is closed source and cannot be updated, so you rely on Tangem's design and on two external audits. There is no screen on the card, so you check transaction details on your phone. That is weaker than a device with its own screen, such as a Ledger or Trezor.

|---|---|
| Send, receive, hold | No Tangem fee; you pay the network fee |
| Swaps (Tangem Express) | Tangem says it adds no markup. You pay the provider's commission or spread (providers include 1inch, ChangeNOW, Changelly and OKX) plus network fees (Coin Bureau, Jan 2026) |
| Buy and sell | Through third parties such as Mercuryo, Simplex and MoonPay, at their rates |
| Tangem Pay card | No monthly or transaction fee at launch; Polygon gas and Visa currency-conversion charges apply (Coin Bureau, Jan 2026) |
"No markup" does not mean free. Swap providers build their margin into the rate, so compare the quote with another service before large swaps. See wallet fees compared.

Security model
Each card holds a secure chip that creates the private key with a hardware random number generator. The key never leaves the chip. To sign, you tap the card on your phone and enter your access code. In a 2- or 3-card set, the same key is copied to the backup cards during setup, so losing one card does not lose your funds.
You can also choose to create a seed phrase in the app, or import one. That makes recovery possible without the cards. But it also brings back the risk Tangem was designed to remove: the phrase exists outside the chip. Tangem says it has sold more than 6 million devices (tangem.com, Oct 2026) and says no card has been hacked. Both are company claims.
Incident history
| Date | What happened | Response |
|---|---|---|
| 30 Dec 2024 | A logging bug in the mobile app wrote private keys into app logs for users who created a seed-phrase wallet. Those logs could reach Tangem support if the user contacted support within seven days. Tangem said fewer than 0.1% of users were potentially affected (Cointelegraph, 31 Dec 2024). | Fixed by an app update on 30 Dec 2024. Tangem deleted support logs, contacted affected users and said no funds were lost. It was criticised for saying little in public at first. Users who never created a seed phrase were not affected. |

Limits to know
- No screen. You verify addresses and amounts on your phone. Malware on the phone could show you false details.
- No firmware updates. This removes the risk of a malicious update, but a flaw found later could not be patched on cards already sold.
- Tangem Pay needs KYC. The card wallet itself does not, but the payment card does, through Tangem's partners.
Key features
- Seedless backup with 2 or 3 identical cards, or the Tangem Ring plus cards.
- Swaps, buy and sell in the app through third-party providers.
- Yield Mode through Aave for stablecoins such as USDC and USDT (added November 2025).
- Tangem Pay: a virtual Visa card that spends your own USDC on Polygon, with Apple Pay and Google Pay. Availability depends on your country.
- Mobile Wallet: a phone-only wallet with keys in the phone's secure storage, which you can later protect with a card.
- WalletConnect for apps on EVM networks, plus NFT viewing.
Backup and recovery
Recovery is where Tangem differs most from other hardware wallets. With a classic device you write down 12 or 24 words and can restore your wallet anywhere. With Tangem's default setup there are no words: the backup is the second and third card. That has three consequences.
- Keep the cards apart. If all cards are stored in one drawer, one fire or burglary can take them all. Keep one at home and one somewhere else you trust.
- Write all backups during setup. Backup cards are created when you activate the wallet, so decide on a 2- or 3-card set before you start.
- The access code is not a backup. It protects a card from someone who finds it. Forgetting it can be fixed with a backup card, but not without one.
If you prefer a written backup that works with other wallets, choose the seed-phrase option during setup and store the words offline. You then lose the "no seed phrase" benefit, but you gain the ability to restore in another wallet if Tangem's app ever stops working.
Supported coins and networks
Tangem says it supports more than 14,100 tokens on 90 blockchains (tangem.com, Oct 2026). In practice that covers Bitcoin, Ethereum and its layer-2 networks, Solana, XRP, Cardano and many smaller chains, plus stablecoins on several networks. You add networks and tokens manually in the app. Check that the exact network you plan to use is listed before you buy, because support for niche chains changes over time.
Setting up safely
- Buy from the official store at
tangem.comor a well-known retailer. Type the address yourself or use a bookmark. Fake shops and resold, pre-set-up cards are a known scam pattern. - Install the Tangem app only from the Apple App Store or Google Play, and check that the publisher is Tangem.
- Let the app check that the card is genuine when you scan it.
- Create the wallet on the card (the recommended option) and write all backup cards during setup. Store backups in different places.
- Set a strong access code. If you choose a seed phrase, follow our seed phrase safety guide.
- Send a small test amount before moving larger sums.
Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| No seed phrase to lose or leak, unless you choose one | Firmware is closed source and cannot be updated |
| Low price for a hardware wallet; backups included | No screen on the device |
| Very simple setup; tap to sign | Phone only; no desktop app |
| Durable card and 25-year warranty | Swap rates include provider margins |
| Wide coin support | Dec 2024 logging bug and slow public disclosure |
Who it suits
Good for: beginners moving savings off an exchange, people who fear losing a paper seed phrase, and phone-first users who want hardware protection without cables.
Look elsewhere if: you want open-source firmware, a screen to verify transactions, or a desktop workflow. A Trezor or Ledger fits better. If you mainly need Bitcoin with advanced controls, see our best Bitcoin wallets.
Alternatives
- Ledger: screen-based devices and broad app support. Compare them in Ledger vs Tangem.
- Trezor: open-source firmware and a screen.
- SafePal: another low-cost device, with air-gapped QR signing.
More options: best hardware wallets and hot vs cold wallets.
Frequently asked questions
Is Tangem safe?
Tangem keeps keys on a certified secure chip and its firmware was reviewed by Kudelski Security (2018) and Riscure (2023). The main trade-offs are closed-source firmware and no screen. In December 2024 an app logging bug exposed keys for a small number of seed-phrase users; Tangem fixed it and said no funds were lost.
What happens if I lose my Tangem card?
Use one of your backup cards. Every card in a set holds the same key, so you can keep using your wallet and order a new set. If you lose every card and did not create a seed phrase, the funds cannot be recovered.
Does Tangem have a seed phrase?
Not by default. Keys are created on the card. You can choose to generate a 12- or 24-word seed phrase in the app, or import an existing one, but then you must protect that phrase.
How much does Tangem cost?
As of 25 October 2026 Tangem's store lists 2 cards for $54.90, 3 cards for $69.90 and the Ring with 2 cards for $160. Prices vary by country and promotion.
Can I use Tangem on a computer?
No. Tangem works only with the iOS or Android app on a phone with NFC. You can connect to web apps through WalletConnect from the phone.
