Tonkeeper review 2026: now Keeper, and no longer TON-only

Tonkeeper, renamed Keeper in September 2026, remains the leading self-custody wallet for TON and now also supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tron and several EVM chains. It is easy to use and gives you your own keys, unlike Telegram's built-in wallets. Its ownership has been unclear in 2026 and its multichain features are new.

Status (as of October 2026): Active, renamed Keeper on 15 Sep 2026 (The Block, 15 Sep 2026). The old domain now redirects to the new one. Ownership: The Open Platform (TOP), the company behind Telegram's custodial wallet, announced a 100% acquisition on 28 Jan 2026. On 1 Aug 2026 TOP said it had taken over day-to-day management but that the share purchase from co-founders Oleg Andreev and Oleg Illarionov had not gone ahead, so they remain shareholders (SpotedCrypto, 16 Sep 2026). Also note: TON's coin was renamed from Toncoin to Gram (ticker GRAM) on 15 Jun 2026; the network is still called The Open Network.

Verdict

For anyone holding TON tokens, jettons or Telegram-linked NFTs, Keeper is still the default self-custody choice. Setup is fast, the interface is clean, and the Battery feature lets you pay network fees without holding the native coin. Keeper says it has more than 77 million registered users (The Block, 15 Sep 2026), a company figure we cannot verify.

The rename to Keeper adds Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tron, BNB Chain, Arbitrum and Base. Those features are only weeks old, and many planned extras (cross-chain DeFi, a dapp browser, perpetual futures) are announced but not dated. If you need mature multichain support today, a long-established multichain wallet may be the safer bet.

Keeper vs Telegram's wallets

This is the most common confusion. Telegram's built-in "Wallet" was renamed Walt on 28 Sep 2026, and Telegram launched a separate Gram wallet for payments, Gifts and Stars (Crypto Briefing, 28 Sep 2026). Telegram's main wallet account has historically been custodial: the company holds the keys and you sign in with your Telegram account. Keeper is a separate app where you hold the keys yourself.

Is Tonkeeper (Keeper) safe?

Security model

Keeper is a standard self-custody wallet: a seed phrase created on your device controls your funds, and the company cannot freeze or recover them. TOP said in both of its 2026 statements that the ownership change does not affect the security, privacy or storage of users' keys.

Incident history

We found no verified security incident in Tonkeeper's own code or servers as of October 2026. The main threats are aimed at users: fake "Tonkeeper" tutorials and download pages that rank in search results, fake airdrops, and drainer sites shared in Telegram groups that trick people into signing transfers. Read our guides to fake wallet apps and crypto wallet scams.

Points to watch

  • New code. Support for Bitcoin, Ethereum and other chains is new, and new code carries more risk than features that have run for years.
  • Ownership. The gap between TOP's January and August statements has not been fully explained.
  • Name change. Scammers often exploit renames. Expect fake "Keeper upgrade" messages.

Key features

  • Battery for paying fees without holding the native coin.
  • GRAM staking through third-party staking pools.
  • TON jettons, NFTs and Telegram usernames in one place.
  • Swaps through in-app providers, and buying with cards, Apple Pay and other methods. Cross-chain swaps were described as planned at the September 2026 rename (The Block).
  • Tonkeeper Pro, a desktop version for advanced users, was included in TOP's January 2026 deal.
  • TON Connect for logging in to TON apps and Telegram mini apps.

Seed phrase and recovery

When you create a wallet, Keeper shows a 24-word recovery phrase. That phrase is the only way to restore the wallet on a new phone or computer. Keeper cannot reset it, and nor can Telegram, because neither holds a copy. If you used Tonkeeper before the rename, nothing changes: the same phrase restores the same TON address.

One technical note: TON wallets come in several contract versions, and the same phrase can show different addresses depending on the version. If a restored wallet looks empty, check the wallet version in the settings before assuming funds are lost.

What the multichain update means

Before September 2026 you needed a second wallet for Bitcoin or Ethereum. Keeper now holds them in the same app, under the same recovery phrase. That is convenient, but it also concentrates risk: anyone who gets your phrase gets every chain at once. If you are moving meaningful amounts of Bitcoin or Ethereum into Keeper, consider keeping savings on a hardware wallet and using Keeper for spending money.

Setting up safely

  1. Type keeperwallet.com yourself or use a bookmark. The old address tonkeeper.com redirects there. Ignore search ads and tutorial sites that offer downloads.
  2. Install from the Apple App Store, Google Play or your browser's official store, and check the publisher.
  3. Create a new wallet and write down the seed phrase on paper. Never type it into a Telegram bot or website. See seed phrase safety.
  4. Check each TON Connect request carefully. If a "claim" or "airdrop" asks you to sign a transfer, it is almost certainly a drainer.
  5. For larger sums, pair a Ledger or keep savings on a hardware wallet.

Pros and cons

ProsCons
The most established self-custody TON walletOwnership picture unclear in 2026
Battery removes the need for gas coinsMultichain support only weeks old

Ledger and Keystone supportHeavy phishing around the brand and the rename

Who it suits

Good for: anyone holding GRAM, TON jettons or Telegram NFTs who wants their own keys, and Telegram users ready to move off a custodial wallet.

Look elsewhere if: you mainly hold Ethereum DeFi positions, Solana or Bitcoin. Specialist wallets for those chains are more mature. For TON-only users wanting another option, see best TON wallets.

Alternatives

  • Trust Wallet: a long-established multichain mobile wallet that also supports TON.
  • SafePal: a hardware wallet and app that support TON.
  • Ledger: hardware protection that can be paired with Keeper.

Background: custodial vs non-custodial wallets.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tonkeeper the same as Keeper?

Yes. Tonkeeper was renamed Keeper on 15 September 2026 and added Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tron, BNB Chain, Arbitrum and Base. Your existing wallet and seed phrase keep working.

Is Tonkeeper safe?

It is a self-custody wallet with no verified incident in its own code as of October 2026. Most losses come from phishing, fake apps and drainer sites, so download only from official stores and never share your seed phrase.

What is the difference between Tonkeeper and Wallet in Telegram?

Keeper gives you a seed phrase and you hold the keys. Telegram's wallet, renamed Walt in September 2026, has mainly been a custodial account tied to your Telegram login, so the provider holds the keys.

Who owns Tonkeeper?

The Open Platform (TOP) announced a full acquisition in January 2026. In August 2026 it said it had taken over management but that the share purchase from the two co-founders had not gone ahead, so they remain shareholders.

Why do I see GRAM instead of TON?

TON's coin was renamed from Toncoin to Gram, ticker GRAM, on 15 June 2026 after a community vote. Your balance did not change.
