OKX Wallet review 2026: a power user's multi-chain wallet from an exchange

OKX Wallet is a capable self-custody wallet with very wide chain coverage, a strong DEX aggregator and hardware wallet support. It suits active on-chain traders. Its client is closed source, it belongs to an exchange group with a 2025 US guilty plea, and swap fees of up to 0.5% add up.

Status as of October 2026: OKX Wallet (formerly OKX Web3 Wallet) is run by the OKX exchange group. CryptoSlate names the operator as Aux Cayes FinTech Co. Ltd of Seychelles. Recent changes: new keyless (MPC) wallets can no longer be created, since 23 May 2025, though existing ones still work (CryptoSlate, Oct 2026). In November 2025 OKX added DEX trading inside its main app, with a self-custody wallet secured by a passkey, on Base, Solana and X Layer (The Block, 13 Nov 2025). In February 2025 the operating entity pleaded guilty in the US to running an unlicensed money-transmitting business and agreed to pay about $505 million.

Verdict

OKX Wallet does a lot. It covers more than 130 blockchains, finds swap routes across many DEXs and bridges, and offers gas-free transfers on OKX's own X Layer network. It also works with Ledger, Trezor and Keystone hardware wallets, which many exchange-made wallets do not.

The trade-offs are trust and cost. The app is closed source, so you rely on OKX's audits rather than public code. Swaps carry an interface fee of up to 0.5%. OKX's compliance history includes a guilty plea in the US and a pause of its DEX aggregator after Bybit's stolen funds were laundered through it. Because the wallet is self-custody, none of that touches your keys. It does tell you about the company.

Is OKX Wallet safe?

In standard mode, keys are created and stored on your device and OKX cannot recover a lost seed phrase. Older keyless wallets split the key into three shares: one on OKX's servers, one on your device and one in your iCloud or Google Drive backup. Any two can rebuild the key. That removes the risk of losing a seed phrase but adds a dependence on OKX's infrastructure. Our MPC vs seed phrase guide explains the trade-off.

The wallet shows risk warnings for suspicious tokens and contracts. As with any wallet that connects to DeFi, the biggest danger is signing a malicious approval. Review your token approvals regularly.

Key features

  • DEX aggregator and bridge that routes swaps across many exchanges and chains.
  • Wide chain support, including Bitcoin and the main EVM, Solana, Tron and TON ecosystems.
  • Multiple wallets and accounts in one app, with watch-only addresses.
  • X Layer, OKX's own Ethereum layer 2, with gas-sponsored transactions.
  • Hardware wallet signing with Ledger, Trezor and Keystone.
  • Integration with the OKX exchange app, so you can move funds between your exchange account and your self-custody wallet.

Supported coins and recovery

OKX Wallet's main strength is breadth. Besides Bitcoin and Ethereum, it covers EVM layer 2s such as Arbitrum, Base, Optimism and Polygon, plus Solana, Tron, TON and many smaller networks, more than 130 in total. One seed phrase controls addresses on all of them.

To recover a seed phrase wallet, install OKX Wallet on a new device and enter your words. The phrase uses the BIP39 standard, so for most chains you can also restore it in another multi-chain wallet if you ever stop using OKX. For a legacy keyless wallet, recovery uses your cloud backup share plus OKX's server share. If you plan to keep one long term, consider moving the funds into a seed phrase wallet you fully control.

OKX staff will never ask for your seed phrase or a screenshot of your backup.

Setting up safely

  1. Get the app from okx.com or the official app stores. Type okx.com yourself or use a bookmark. Fake "OKX Wallet" extension guides on free web-hosting sites are common.
  2. Check the extension publisher in the Chrome Web Store before installing, and be wary of sponsored search results.
  3. Choose seed phrase mode and write the words on paper. OKX cannot restore them.
  4. Connect a hardware wallet for larger balances so transactions are confirmed on the device.
  5. Check availability. OKX geo-blocks some regions, and features differ by country.

Who OKX Wallet suits, and who should look elsewhere

Good fit: active DeFi and multi-chain traders, OKX exchange users who want self-custody, and people who want a feature-rich extension that can sign with a hardware wallet.

Look elsewhere if: you want open-source software, you prefer a wallet with no exchange behind it, or you are a beginner who only needs to hold a few coins.

A sensible setup for many people is to use OKX Wallet as the everyday interface for swaps and dApps, with a hardware wallet connected for anything you cannot afford to lose. That keeps the routing and chain coverage while the keys stay offline. Keep a separate burner account for new or unknown dApps.

Alternatives

  • MetaMask: the most widely supported EVM wallet, partly open source.
  • Bitget Wallet: a similar exchange-backed wallet with a payments focus.
  • Binance Wallet: built into the Binance app, with keyless MPC by default.
  • Rabby: open-source EVM extension with strong transaction previews.

Frequently asked questions

Is OKX Wallet safe?

OKX Wallet is self-custody, so OKX cannot move your funds in seed phrase mode, and it has published audits and runs a bug bounty. Past incidents were a 2023 DEX contract exploit of about $2.7 million that OKX pledged to reimburse, and a 2025 pause of its DEX aggregator over laundering by hackers.

Is OKX Wallet the same as OKX Web3 Wallet?

Yes. OKX Web3 Wallet is the older name for what is now called OKX Wallet.

What are OKX Wallet's swap fees?

An interface fee of 0% to 0.5% plus DEX pool fees, slippage and network fees, as of October 2026. Cross-chain swaps add bridge fees.

Can I still create a keyless OKX wallet?

No. According to CryptoSlate, new keyless MPC wallets could no longer be created from 23 May 2025. Existing keyless wallets still work. New users set up a seed phrase wallet.

Does OKX Wallet support Ledger?

Yes. It works with Ledger and Trezor over USB and with Keystone 3 devices over USB or QR code.
