Zengo review 2026: the no-seed-phrase wallet, now owned by eToro

Zengo is the best-known seedless wallet: it splits signing between your phone and Zengo's server using MPC and lets you recover with email, a cloud backup and a face scan. It is very easy to use and has no public record of a hack. In return you depend on Zengo's servers and recovery process, swap costs can be high, and the app is not fully open source.

Status (as of October 2026): Active. Founded in 2018 by ZenGo Ltd. in Israel. eToro agreed to buy Zengo on 15 Apr 2026 (eToro, 15 Apr 2026) for a reported price of about $70 million (CoinDesk citing Bloomberg, 15 Apr 2026), and the deal closed on 30 Apr 2026 (eToro Q1 2026 results). The brand continues, and eToro says the wallet stays separate from its regulated exchange services. Zengo says it has more than 2 million users in 180+ countries (eToro, Apr 2026).

Verdict

Most self-custody wallets hand you 12 or 24 words and warn you never to lose them. Zengo removes that step. Your key is never created in one place; instead, two "secret shares" on your phone and on Zengo's server sign together. If you lose your phone, you recover with your email, a file in your own iCloud or Google Drive, and a face scan.

For newcomers who fear losing a seed phrase, that is a real improvement, and Zengo has no public history of a wallet hack. The cost is dependence. Day-to-day signing needs Zengo's server, recovery depends on its process and on third-party escrow if the company disappears, and you cannot export a standard seed phrase to another wallet. The Block rates Zengo 3.2 and lists swap fees of up to 4% (The Block ratings, Oct 2026).

Is Zengo safe?

Security model

Zengo uses multi-party computation (MPC). Two independently created shares, one on your phone and one on Zengo's server, cooperate to sign each transaction without ever being combined. Neither Zengo nor a thief who steals one share can move funds alone (Zengo help centre, Oct 2026).

Recovery uses three factors: your email, a decryption code stored in your personal iCloud or Google Drive, and a face scan. You can add a second email, a second cloud backup and a trusted second selfie. If Zengo stops operating, independent escrow and trustee providers can trigger a recovery process published on GitHub so you can still move funds.

This is a sound design, but it has different risks from a seed phrase. Anyone who takes over your email and cloud account and can pass the face check is a threat, so protect both accounts with strong passwords and two-factor authentication. You also cannot move your wallet to another app using standard words.

Incident history

We found no verified incident in which Zengo wallets were hacked, and Zengo says that "since 2018, no Zengo wallet has ever been hacked" (eToro, Apr 2026). That is a company claim. Zengo's own security team has published research on weaknesses in other wallets, including a 2020 report on unlimited token approvals in dApp wallets (Cointelegraph, Mar 2020). See our wallet security incidents timeline.

Key features

  • No seed phrase: 2-party MPC with 3-factor recovery.
  • Web3 Firewall (ClearSign): warns about risky dApp transactions (Pro).
  • Theft Protection and Legacy Transfer, an inheritance feature (Pro).
  • Bitcoin Vaults and multiple wallets (Pro).
  • Buy, sell, swap and ETH staking in the app.
  • Zengo Business: team wallets for companies.
  • 24/7 in-app support.

Backup and recovery in practice

Recovery is where Zengo differs most from other wallets. When you set it up, the app links your wallet to an email address, saves a recovery file in your own iCloud or Google Drive and records a 3D face scan. On a new phone, you sign in with the email, connect the same cloud account and pass the face check. Zengo cannot complete this process for you, and a thief needs all three factors.

Three practical points follow:

  • Your email and cloud accounts are now part of your wallet. If you lose access to either, recovery gets harder. Use strong, unique passwords, two-factor authentication and up-to-date recovery options on both.
  • Add the optional backups. A second email, a second cloud backup and a trusted second selfie reduce the chance of being locked out.
  • There is no standard export. You cannot type a 12-word phrase into another wallet. To leave Zengo, you send your coins to a new wallet.

What the eToro takeover means

eToro is a listed trading platform, and its ownership gives Zengo more financial backing than a venture-funded startup. eToro says the wallet remains separate from its regulated services and that activity in the wallet is not a regulated activity or guaranteed by any eToro entity (eToro, Apr 2026). So far the app, the brand and the recovery model are unchanged. Watch for changes to fees, data sharing or terms in future updates.

Setting up safely

  1. Type the official domain zengo.com yourself or use a bookmark, and install the app only from the App Store or Google Play. Check that the publisher is ZenGo Ltd.
  2. Use an email account protected with a strong password and two-factor authentication. It is one of your recovery factors.
  3. Complete the cloud backup and face scan during setup, and add the optional backup factors.
  4. Turn on biometric lock in the app.
  5. Test recovery on a second device with a small balance before you rely on the wallet.

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

It suits beginners and mobile-first users who want self-custody without managing a seed phrase, and families who value the inheritance feature.

Look elsewhere if you want to be fully independent of any company, need a browser extension or hardware wallet, trade often, or want open-source apps.
